Brake Disc

Brake disc is one of the core components of the hydraulic disc brake system, and it makes up the brake assembly with the brake pad. Generally, each hydraulic disc brake system is equipped with two brake discs, and installed in the both ends of the drum. Some small and medium sized drilling drawworks only has equipped with one (1) brake disc mounted at one end of the winch drum.

According to the structure, the brake disc can be divided into three types: water-cooled brake disc, air-cooled brake disc and solid brake disc.

Water-cooled brake disc has internal cooling passages with inlet and outlet. The inlet is in the inner diameter direction of the brake disc, and the outlet is in the outer diameter direction of the brake disc, which is used to drain water to prevent the brake disc cracking in the cold winter. During normal operation, drain port is closed with a plug. When the hydraulic disc brake system works, the brake cooling water is circulated in the brake disc cooling passages and which will radiate the heat produced by the brake disc friction.

Air-cooled brake disc has internal natural ventilation passage and it radiates through natural ventilation ducts and surfaces.

Solid surface brake disc is mainly used for small drilling rig and workover rigs and it radiates through the surface.
